Deepsea does not provide any facilities for editing the content or adjusting the size of pictures. To edit pictures and get them the right size to display on deepsea.co.uk you will need to use a picture editing program (some examples are PhotoShop, PaintShop, PhotoImpact, PhotoPaint). The chances are that your scanner or digital camera will have come with a basic program for picture editing. (See also Managing Pictures above.)
Here are our tips for editing pictures to make them look good on deepsea.co.uk:
The size a picture is displayed at is measured in pixels. Use your picture editing program to adjust the image size of a picture to the size it should be displayed before uploading it to deepsea.co.uk. For a normally proportioned picture we recommend you should not exceed 450 pixels on the long side and 300 pixels on the short side.
Pictures of long and thin proportions may be sized differently, but in any case keep the maximum size of any dimension below 700 pixels.
Save pictures as file type.jpg. Your picture editor may ask you what jpg quality to use. Higher jpg quality gives a larger file. Lower jpg quality gives a smaller file. We recommend low or medium quality. If in doubt, begin with low jpg quality and only move up to medium quality if low quality looks too grainy.
The amount of computer file space used by a picture is measured in kBytes. The bigger a picture is, the longer it will take for people to view it on their web browsers. It is in your interest that visitors to your web pages should be able to view them as quickly as possible. Try and keep the file size of your picture files below 30 kBytes.
File size is a function of the image size and the jpg quality it is saved at. You will not have direct control over the file size of a picture.
To reduce the file size of a picture, use your picture editor to reduce the image width and height, or save it with a lower jpg quality.
You can also use image optimising programs like ImageReady to squash pictures into smaller files.
Note that the deepsea will reject uploaded pictures of greater than 50 kBytes.
You will have a limit on the total number of kBytes of pictures that you can have on deepsea.co.uk. (The actual limit depends on the number of notice boards and galleries you have). The system will reject uploaded pictures which would take you over this limit.
